Kathryn Smith, Principal
Kathy Smith, as one of the founders of Business Compensation Consulting, brings over three decades of insurance and financial industry experience to its clients, and is highly regarded as an expert in her field. Over this time, she has developed a keen sense for how the level of service and the quality of products help businesses solve the issues of retention of executive talent. Ms. Smith also works with accountants, attorneys, and consultants to provide a coordinated financial strategy that minimizes the impact of plan costs on earnings.
Ms. Smith frequently presents seminars on compensation strategies in the financial industry. She has presented these seminars through various national and state financial trade associations. In addition, she has taught courses on financial planning for banking professionals at the Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking. Ms. Smith graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
Kelly W. Earls, JD, CPA, Principal
Kelly W. Earls has advised clients in the areas of Customized Nonqualified Benefits and Corporate-Owned Life Insurance since 1996. Mr. Earls background as a licensed attorney and CPA, as well as having Series 6 and 63 licenses through the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, makes him uniquely qualified to address issues related to design, implementation, and regulatory support of nonqualified benefit plans and COLI product selection.
Mr. Earls is accustomed to interacting with regulators to answer regulatory questions, as well as to gain necessary approval regarding plans client businesses have decided to implement. He often works with Boards of Directors and Committee Members, educating them on the impact to financial statements of proposed work.
Kelly has been a frequent speaker at seminars sponsored by various National and State trade associations. He received his Bachelor in Business Administration in Accounting, his Master in Business Administration, and Juris Doctorate from Texas Tech University.
Brandon Page, President
Brandon Page has been in the financial service industry over 15 years, and has an extensive background in the management of operations of FINRA broker/dealers and investment advisory firms. Mr. Page has been with Business Compensation Consulting since its inception, and he oversees the daily operations of the firm as well as the ongoing servicing for all clients. He communicates daily and works directly with senior level executives, helping with the structure and ongoing interpretation of their benefit plans.
Prior to joining BCC, Mr. Page served as the Financial Operations Principal (FINOP) and Chief Compliance Officer for Morgan Spaulding, Inc. He also served as the Director of Operations and Compliance Officer for Placemark Investments, Inc., a registered investment adviser, helping build a customized asset management wrap fee program.
Mr. Page earned a BBA in Finance from the University of Texas at Tyler in 1995. In addition, he attended the New York Institute of Finance, where he became certified in Brokerage Operations, Stock Brokerage Accounting and Fundamentals of the Securities Industry. He also received special certification from the Investment Training Institute for Financial & Operations Principals. Mr. Page maintains Series 7 & 63 financial licenses in good standing.
Rob Barton, JD, MBA, Managing Consultant
Rob Barton has been advising financial institutions in the areas of nonqualified benefits and Corporate-Owned Life Insurance (COLI) for nearly a decade. He has worked with businesses nationwide and has extensive experience in the design, administration and regulatory requirements of nonqualified retirement plans.
Rob earned his B.S. from Brigham Young University, his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School, and his MBA from The Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, where he emphasized in finance and strategic management.
Maria Kell, Senior Consultant
Maria Kell has worked for over 25 years in the financial industry. Her expertise in mergers and acquisitions, lending, credit, accounting, and retail banking gives her a broad, holistic perspective, enabling her to provide innovative solutions to her clients’ needs.
Maria has also spent over 10 years designing and implementing Sales and Executive Incentive Compensation plans for a diverse group of lines of business and organizations.
Maria advises businesses on qualified and nonqualified benefits, as well as Corporate-Owned Life Insurance (COLI). Maria earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®.
Brad Binversie, Consultant
Brad Binversie engages with businesses and financial institutions to help design and informally fund highly specialized strategies to retain, reward, and recruit the executive team. He specializes in the design of customized, nonqualified deferred compensation plans in tandem with wealth holding, creative succession planning, and estate planning strategies.
Brad’s key focus is to ensure the company’s decision-maker(s) have the proper understanding, appropriate design, and correct implementation of their nonqualified benefit and/or COLI programs. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and his Master’s degree from Eastern New Mexico University.
Bryan Hanks, Consultant
Bryan C. Hanks has served the financial services industry over the last 18 years. His expertise centers on Board Directors, C-level, and Senior Executives across community based lending and saving institutions. Taking a comprehensive approach, he is responsible for implementing key employee planning and retention strategies through qualified and non-qualified benefit plans for officers and providing funding strategies to reduce the rising cost of health benefits.
Recognized in the industry for his keen business sense and political knowledge, Mr. Hanks has advised many boards and senior management through challenging transitions to a successful conclusion. Bryan earned a BBA from the University of North Texas while working as a Sous Chef and Sommelier, and has served the community throughout his career with organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity, and UMC Employment Ministries.
Gabe Pelphrey, Consultant
Gabe Pelphrey advises businesses on the design, implementation and ongoing service of nonqualified benefit plans. He is an advocate of incentive-based compensation that is significant in benefits to the executives while at the same time insignificant in cost to the shareholders. He believes that an executive with a vested interest in the annual return of the business is more profitable to the shareholders, and more likely to be retained for the duration of the executive’s career. This approach is also used in attracting new key executives.
Bo Stahler, Consultant
John B. “Bo” Stahler brings more than 30 years of experience in the financial industry. He can speak from personal experience on the value of life insurance assets used to offset the costs of Employee Benefit Plans with his past banking experience as President and CEO of the American National Bank in Wichita Falls, TX. He is also a past Chairman of the Texas Bankers Association and a Board Member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas.
Jason Varnell, Consultant
Jason Varnell has served clients in the financial sector for over 20 years. He has worked specifically with financial institutions across the country in the areas of compensation, nonqualified benefits, and strategic investments such as Corporate-Owner Life Insurance (COLI). His extensive prior experience includes wealth management and financial planning for clients, securities trading and operations, credit analysis, and loan review.
Jason also partners with accountants and attorneys to assist companies in managing the tax, accounting, regulatory, and legislative issues related to the benefit plans and financing alternatives. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree with honors from Samford University, concentrating in Finance, and is a Registered Investment Advisor.
Tyler Moore, Consultant
Tyler Moore has worked for 22 years in the financial industry primarily as a financial advisor. His expertise is working with business owners and financial institutions, which gives him a broad, holistic perspective that enables him to provide innovative solutions to his client’s needs.
A graduate of Texas Tech University, Tyler holds a Bachelor of Administration in Finance, and he has spent the last 7 years working for a diverse group of businesses and organizations designing and implementing Sales and Executive Incentive Compensation plans. Tyler advises companies on business transition planning, key-person retention, qualified and nonqualified benefits, and he also works to integrate these plans into personal plans for owners and partners.
Steven J. Marlow, CPA, MAcc, Consulting Principal
Steven J. Marlow has been advising financial institutions regarding non-qualified benefit plans and the utilization of life insurance as an informal funding vehicle for more than fifteen years. Mr. Marlow began his career in KPMG’s Tax Department, where he worked in the Financial Services division. Mr. Marlow subsequently became the Tax Compliance Director for one of KPMG’s clients, a major life insurance company. In that position, Mr. Marlow helped create products designed specifically for the financial marketplace and resolve technical issues related to existing Corporate-Owned Life Insurance (COLI) programs. Mr. Marlow was recruited by Clark Bardes Consulting, now Clark Consulting, as a Consulting Principal of the organization. In that position, Mr. Marlow was one of eight members of the National Accounts Team (NAT), a group of experienced consultants who were required to be involved with any COLI transaction of $10 million or more. As a NAT member, Mr. Marlow’s focus was to ensure the financial institution’s decision-maker(s) had the proper understanding, appropriate design and correct implementation of their non-qualified benefit and/or COLI programs. In 2007, Mr. Marlow integrated his practice with the well respected financial consulting firm, Business Compensation Consulting.
Mr. Marlow has been a frequent speaker at seminars sponsored by various National and State trade associations. To ensure his clients have a complete understanding of the various products available, Mr. Marlow has his Series 6 and 63 licenses through the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Mr. Marlow received his Bachelor in Accountancy and his Master’s in Accounting with a Concentration in Taxation from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
Jill Mahler, Associate Consultant
Jill Mahler heads up marketing and client acquisitions for BCC’s St. Louis office, working closely with consultant Steve Marlow since 2013. Jill’s philosophy when working with clients and prospects is to practice active listening, while helping to uncover the primary concerns and motivations of the organization. Brainstorming creative and effective solutions that analyze the big picture and all of the individual moving parts are what Steve and Jill do best.
Ms. Mahler’s experience in the financial services industry allows her to excel technically, while her experience working with C-Level executives provides her the communication techniques to be highly effective in her position. Since joining the team, Jill has taken an active role developing her knowledge of Executive & Director Benefit Programs and the informal funding of Corporate-Owned Life Insurance (COLI). Jill received her BFA in Interior Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design, and has worked in the financial services industry since 2010.
Robert Orr, Senior Consultant
Robert Orr has more than 30 years of experience with a main focus in the insurance and investment fields. He works with financial institutions in the areas of nonqualified benefits and Corporate-Owned Life Insurance (COLI). Robert uses his keen ability to listen and understand client needs in order to provide the most appropriate solutions for their executive compensation and benefit plans. He earned his Bachelors of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.
John M. Anderson, C.P.A., Senior Consultant
John M. Anderson brings more than 30 years of experience in the financial industry. He has worked as a Senior Consultant focused on the design, implementation and administration of nonqualified executive benefit plans that often included the use of COLI financing strategies. John has also worked as a Partner at the accounting firm of Virchow, Krause and Company. Prior to his accounting career, John was the CEO of Bankers Service Corporation, a subsidiary of Bankers Bank Wisconsin, as well as a former banker. John graduated with his BA in Accounting from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and attained his CPA designation. He served as chairman of the Wisconsin Institute of CPAs Financial institutions committee.
Jonathan T. Anderson, Consultant
Jonathan Anderson joined BCC in January of 2015 as a consultant specializing in new business development and client support. He brings with him over 10 years of experience in various facets of business. With a strong analytical ability blended with creativity not typically seen in the industry, Jonathan has strong problem solving skills that translate into quality solutions for clients.
Prior to joining BCC, Jonathan was the Director of Operations at Executive Benefits Network (EBN) where he was involved in nearly every aspect of the business. His role encompassed a broad range of tasks including: strategic planning, process development, leadership, teambuilding, new business development, marketing, and human resources administration. Before EBN, his experience included public accounting and corporate tax.
Jonathan holds his B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He owns an integrative wellness clinic with his wife, Aleisha, in Milwaukee. They have two children, Amani and Nadia, and, as a family, enjoy the outdoors, snowboarding, and playing music.
